Bushwick Open Studios and Arts Festival 2008

BOS 08

Do you live or work in Bushwick? Are you an artist, performer, musician, community or arts organization? If yes, then you must be a part of BOS ‘08!

What is the Bushwick Open Studios & Arts Festival?

The Bushwick Open Studios and Arts Festival (B.O.S.) is an annual self-organized art festival to be held in Bushwick, Brooklyn. This year’s festival will be happening on the weekend of June 6-8, 2008. Anyone in the community is welcome to participate by presenting art work, organizing activities and events, or by helping to produce the Festival. The purpose of the Festival is to create an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community by sharing artistic projects and encouraging community interaction and dialogue. BOS does not operate within set neighborhood boundaries, but in the past the Festival has generally included spaces near the L train between the Montrose and Myrtle-Wyckoff stops, and on the J/M/Z train between the Flushing and Myrtle-Wyckoff stops. Check out some pictures from last year’s festival on our Press + Media page!

Benefits of Registration

When you register before May 15, you will be listed on the website and on the printed map and program, including an indexed and searchable profile page on the website. Registrations received after May 15 will be listed on the website only. Artists and performers in group shows can register individually for a full listing and web profile, or the organizer of a group show or event can simply register the show/event as a whole. In this case, individual artists will be listed only as part of a group show or event, rather than getting an individual detailed listing. All physical locations where there is at least one registrant will appear on the Festival map, which will be available on the website and distributed in print form during the event. To view/download an example of last year’s festival map, see the Past Events section of the Events page.

About the Registration Fee

As much as we would love to keep the festival free, having a small registration fee means that we can do a lot more promotion and have a bigger and better festival overall. Registration fees cover promotion and festival operations. Any funds remaining in the Festival account will be used for future Arts In Bushwick events and community activities. The fee is $35 per registration - that means each individual artist, group show or event.

We also need volunteers during the weekend of the Festival, and are happy to give fee waivers to anyone who is willing to help out for at least 3 hours during the event. Volunteers help to put on Festival events, help out Festival attendees, and generally keep the event running smoothly. If you would like to volunteer in lieu of paying the registration fee, please contact us at volunteer@artsinbushwick.org.

If you want to participate but don’t have a space to show or perform:

Generally, artists will need to find their own spaces to show work or perform during the Festival. However, there are a number of group shows and events being organized as part of the event, and a number of spaces are seeking performers and artists to show in their spaces. Go to the space sharing page for more information. Once you know where you will be showing or performing, come back and register!

If you are an  art space/organization with a complicated schedule or group show, or a space seeking artists/performers:

Contact openstudios@artsinbushwick.org to describe what you’re up to, and we can figure out the best way to match you with artists, register you, and put your activities on the map and calendar.
