Place+Displaced: Mapping Cultural Vitality for Civic Participation
Arts in Bushwick is proud to be part of an exciting new project though our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas — Place + Displaced: Mapping Cultural Vitality for Civic Participation. Using a broad definition of arts and culture to reflect the diverse range of cultural vitality in our neighborhoods, we will be working in partnership with other arts and community organizations to gather data for a Cultural Vitality map and report focused on Bushwick, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint.
This project exemplifies two of Arts In Bushwick’s main goals: community sustainability and neighborhood organizing, and artist support/networking/promotions. Through surveys and interviews with a broad range of arts and culture organizations and individuals, this project seeks to describe the cultural vitality that currently exists in our neighborhood, as well as discussing threats to the sustainability of this rich cultural landscape. The completed map and report will serve as a resource for Fractured Atlas (and through FA, for neighborhoods all over the city), and for us (and through Arts in Bushwick, for current and incoming local residents and other organizations), and will also contribute to organizing and advocacy efforts in Bushwick and throughout the city.
As part of the project we are trying to survey a wide a range of artists, cultural organizations, and creative industry businesses. The surveys are short and easy to fill out. You don’t need to answer any questions that you don’t want to answer. There is no need to report your, or your organization’s, specific address if you are worried about landlords/neighbors/zoning/unwanted publicity. We’ve gotten a bunch of great responses to the survey - thanks so much to everyone who has participated!
If you haven’t yet, the survey is still open, and we’d love to hear from you!
To take the survey:
Individual artists should fill out the individual survey.
Anyone who wants to represent for an arts organization, creative business, or other community group that engages in arts or cultural activities should fill out the organizational survey.
Nothing is too big or too small. We want to hear about anyone or anything even peripherally involved with the arts or culture, from your friend’s apartment, to the church down the block with the great choir, to the frame supply store down the street, to the commercial gallery that’s been around for ages.
